The Story of Cupid and Valentines Day

In Roman mythology, there is an interesting story about Cupid and his wife Psyche. Venus, the goddess of love, was very jealous of Psyche’s beauty and asked Cupid to punish her. But instead of obeying her order, Cupid fell in love with Psyche. He considered Psyche as his wife but since Psyche was mortal, she was not allowed to see her husband. Cupid and Psyche were very happy till the time her sisters asked her to have a look at her husband Cupid. But the moment she looked at Cupid, he punished her and also left her alone. They also lost their beautiful gardens as well as castles and Psyche found herself lying alone in an open field where there was neither Cupid nor any other human being. As she moved here and there to find Cupid, she landed in the temple of Venus. Venus, who wanted to destroy Psyche, gave her several tasks to perform and each task was difficult than the previous one.

The last task that was assigned to Psyche by Venus was taking a little box to the underworld. In this box, she was asked to bring a portion of the beauty of Pluto’s wife, Proserpine. She was also advised not to open the box on her way. But Psyche’s curiosity made her open the box and inside it, she found deadly slumber instead of beauty.

Soon, Cupid found that Psyche was lying on the ground and she was lifeless. He collected the deadly slumber from her and kept it inside the box. Both Venus and Cupid forgave her and Psyche was transformed into a goddess due to her immense love for Cupid.
